The third most prevalent trace mineral in the human body is copper. We use it to absorb iron, form collagen, and produce red blood cells. Outside of our bodies, its thermal and electrical charges make it the ideal metal for energy conduction. It is solid but alive, incandescent but ever-present. The Slow Chair is a meditation chair that uses copper to provide support, balance, and energy flow to those who sit in it. The seat and back, which have physical contact with the sitter, are made of copper. Meanwhile, the base is made of repurposed 100-year-old ceiling beams, lending the piece not only solid roots but also the dependable history of a fragment that has come full circle, from the ceiling to the earth. The artist's own healing journey has frequently led down roads that have proven too loud and turbulent to truly sit with life's delicate alchemy. He wants to use this chair to honor everyone's need to feel supported and upheld during the inevitable times of malleable metallic change.

Luke Malaney is a Red Hook based wood-worker and artist whose craft mixes whimsical, free-form design with robust construction and old world joinery. Trained in classic wood-handling techniques by Roman old-timer Remo Capoli, his pieces walk a fine line between furniture and sculpture without ever sacrificing the most acute attention to detail. His explorations blend the naturalistic with the dream-like while always honoring the importance of functionality and endurance.
